Ahead of their visit to Australia, US psych rockers Moon Duo are today unleashing their brand new video for the track ‘Free The Skull’.
Coming straight out of the beating heart of the psychedelic music scene, San Francsico, Moon Duo continue a tradition of heady, ethereal music that goes all the way back to the ’60s, their latest trip being their 2015 LP Shadow of the Sun.
Taken from Shadow of the Sun, ‘Free the Skull’ is a driving, synth infused drone journey into the vast minds of the two piece’s members Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada.
Video director Tina Slatter explained the story behind the clip “I was inspired by a sort of noir detective sound I heard in ‘Free the Skull’ and an instinct to filter this sensibility through the dreamscape of young girl detectives. We wanted to make the little girls not just cute symbols, but something stranger than that, portals to an unexpected idea of what “freeing the skull” could mean—and worked with designers and performers from my theater company, Half Straddle, to render the world of it.
I love how hard Moon Duo’s sound can be, as well as dream-y and ritualistic—the girls bowing down to this alien force seemed a natural narrative to reflect that.”
Check it out below and don’t miss the band when they pop by Australia this month.
