If you’re brave enough to put yourself out there as a musician, you’ve gotta expect not everyone will vibe on what you do. Just ask Nickelback, who regularly play their platinum records to sold-out stadiums whilst occupying the title of the world’s most hated band.

It simply comes with the territory and if you’re tough, you won’t let the haters get to you. But if you’re smart and have a sharp sense of humour on you, you’ll take that hate and use it to promote one of your upcoming gigs, like Melbourne band Jaala.

Led by the enigmatic Cosima Jaala, the eponymous band are currently enjoying a spot as triple j’s Feature Album of the week, but not every triple j listener has responded to the band’s debut, Hard Hold, as favourably as Richard Kingsmill.

“Some wonderful responses to the album here from triple j listeners,” the band writes on Facebook. “Richie King has made a big mistake, the people of Oz are unsettled by our music. Never been more proud. Suffer! It’s gonna be played heaps more before he week is out ha ha ha (evil cackle).”

The band is launching the album this weekend at The Curtin in Melbourne and they decided to plug the gig by sharing some of the “rave reviews / hate mail” they’ve received from triple j listeners over on the album’s Feature Album page.

Some choice cuts include:

There’s hope for us all to make an album and get it played on triple j… Even with no musical talent, the heck was going on?!

If you want to check out Jaala’s divisive debut album for yourself, you can hear it until the end of the week on triple j or head on over to the band’s official SoundCloud page and listen to Hard Hold, in all its controversy, below.
