The announcement of the full festivities for Vivid Sydney has of course brought with it once again the full musical lineup set to rock the the city’s famous Opera House as part of Vivid Music, which this year includes New Order, Bon Iver, and more.
This year will also see performances from local favourites Ta-ku and Hiatus Kaiyote, as well as internationally acclaimed composer Max Richter, who’ll be bringing his innovative and unique ‘Sleep’ project to Australia.
One event we’re particularly excited about is party legends Heaps Gay’s ‘Festival of Queer Delights’ which will see Marrickville’s Factory Theatre will become transformed into an all immersive, all inclusive carnival of music, art and performance across 3 stages on the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend. Presented by FBi Radio.
featuring on the Heaps Gay Lineup is Tone Deaf favourite Rainbow Chan who will be performing alongsid Moon Holiday and Corin. To celebrate the upcoming event, Vivid Festival and Sydney in general Rainbow curated a guide to her favourite Sydney haunts, check them out below before you visit later this month.
Cafe
Two Chaps. 122 Chapel St, Marrickville
That’s my regular spot with my best friend/ comic book artist, Nicky Minus. We chat about growing older and other curiosities over haloumi, mushroom and egg toasties.
Record Store
Repressed Records. 413 King St, Newtown
Repressed records provides the goods. They stock many interesting local acts and have a charming book collection.
Venue
Plan B Small Club. 53-55 Liverpool St, Sydney
Goodgod-now-Plan B Small Club has a good-sized room for a heaving dance party. And it’s right next to Korean BBQ which can only be a bonus.
Clothing Store
Alpha 60. 500 George St
Alpha 60 is pretty on point. My wardrobe has slowly turned monochrome because of them.
Restaurant
Chat Thai. 20 Campbell St, Haymarket
Chat Thai never fails. Their lunch and supper menus are ideal for those looking for a small and cheap bite. I like to soothe those fiery spices with a perfect pandan dumpling and coconut drink.
Bar
Earl’s Juke Joint. 407 King St, Newtown
Earl’s Juke Joint will make all lumbersexuals C.R.E.A.M themselves (i.e. they stop bar service when Wu-tang comes on, see what I did there?) They make great cocktails and the ambience is nice. I see many Tinder dates there.
Chill out spot
McIvers Baths. 145-149 Beach St, Coogee
McIvers Baths in Coogee for ladies who want to relax, exercise and clear their minds in a safe environment.
Vivid Tips
There are heaps of interesting things on like Kucka and Rachael Archibald’s collaborative digital work #Portalsat The Basement and Oneohtrix Point Never, but the event I really want to see and missed out on tickets is Björk’s DJ set at Carriageworks! Can someone please hook me up?
