Well done, everyone. Despite claims in the recent few months that democracy is dead, all voting systems are inherently rigged, and the world is a vampire set to drain, this year’s Hottest 100 (by which we actually mean last year’s) has set a few new voting records.
Firstly, this is the largest amount of overall voters the poll has ever attracted, with a whopping 2,255,110 votes cast – that’s 7.6% up on last year, a new record, and more proof that the old mail or fax in system simply wouldn’t be feasible these days, even if it was fun to walk into the ABC Shop to get the voting coupon.
A better record for those with national pride and VB coursing through their veins is that 66 Australian songs have made the list, which is also the most ever.
In addition, 23 artists make their Hottest 100 debut, 26 artists were first discovered on triple j Unearthed – and songs from 13 countries make the list.
Tune into the countdown from midday (AEDT) tomorrow. Perth, you have to wake up at 9am to hear the start. Sorry about that!
