May 14th marks four years since Vampire Weekend released their third record, Modern Vampires Of The City, and a lot has changed for the group in that time. However, frontman Ezra Koenig has taken to Instagram this morning to outline the group’s previous movements and their current plans.
In an Instagram post this morning, Koenig outlined what exactly the group has been up to since the release of their third album. Breaking up their movements into years, he noted how 2013 saw the release of Modern Vampires Of The City, while 2014 saw a year devoted to touring and promotion.
2015 saw Koenig take a “mental health year”, as “putting 3 albums in stores was taxing”, and noted how he also worked on a “vibey project” that we’ll be hearing more about soon. 2016 reportedly saw him spend a lot of time in the library researching with grad students, though he didn’t make reference to the departure of multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij, who left in 2016 to pursue a solo career.
However, it’s the events of 2017 that we’re most interested in, because it seems to indicate a new record is on the way. Koenig stated that 2017 consists of “recording, trying to finish ASAP”, noting that the record is “a lil more springtime than the last one,” and adding that “guitar’s not dead.”
There are currently two songs confirmed for the album, one titled ‘Conversation’, with the other being called ‘Flower Moon’. Koenig noted “Flower Moon is hard to finish but I think it belongs on the album.” He also managed to let us know that the album is tentatively titled Mitsubishi Macchiato.
It was revealed last year that Rostam Batmanglij is still working with Koenig, with his contributions set to be featured on the new album, however details of these contributions are yet to emerge.
Thankfully, we can rest easy knowing that new Vampire Weekend music is on the horizon. So all that’s left for us to do now is to sit back and wait for the curiously titled Mitsubishi Macchiato to drop.
