It looks like Lana Del Rey's Radiohead copyright lawsuit is all sorted

The last few months have seen music fans taking sides in the newest musical copyright lawsuit, which has seen Radiohead apparently take Lana Del Rey to court over alleged similarities between her song ‘Get Free’ and their hit ‘Creep’. Now, it seems as though the feud may have been quietly resolved.

Back in January, Lana Del Rey took to Twitter to announce that Radiohead were suing her because her song ‘Get Free’ sounded an awful lot like their huge 1992 track ‘Creep’.

“It’s true about the lawsuit,” Lana Del Rey revealed on Twitter. “Although I know my song wasn’t inspired by Creep, Radiohead feel it was and want 100% of the publishing – I offered up to 40 over the last few months but they will only accept 100. Their lawyers have been relentless, so we will deal with it in court.”

Of course, many were quick to point out that Radiohead themselves were sued for infringing upon the chord progression in The Hollies’ ‘The Air That I Breathe”.

“What’s hilarious is that the point in that song that Radiohead got sued over, is the chord progression, which basically matches that of the chord progression in a lot of similar ways, in the Lana Del Rey song,” music critic Anthony Fantano noted at the time

“So basically, Radiohead are suing Lana over the least original part of their song.”

However, things then got a little bit complicated when a representative for Radiohead announced that no lawsuit was actually ever filed.

“As Radiohead’s music publisher, it’s true that we’ve been in discussions since August of last year with Lana Del Rey’s representatives,” a statement from Radiohead’s representation read. “It’s clear that the verses of ‘Get Free’ use musical elements found in the verses of ‘Creep’ and we’ve requested that this be acknowledged in favour of all writers of ‘Creep.’”

“To set the record straight, no lawsuit has been issued and Radiohead have not said they ‘will only accept 100%’ of the publishing of ‘Get Free.’”

Now, whether a lawsuit was ever filed or not, it sounds as though the whole mess is over, with Lana Del Rey announcing the news to fans at her performance at Brazil’s Lollapalooza over the weekend.

“Now that my lawsuit’s over, I guess I can sing that song [‘Get Free’] any time I want, right?”

While Lana Del Rey has indeed been abstaining from performing ‘Get Free’ at some of her recent gigs, she’s been managing to sneak in shorter versions of the tune into a few live shows over the last couple of months. With Lana about to touch down in Australia for her first Aussie shows since 2012 this week, here’s hoping some eager local audiences will be able to hear this dreamy number in person real soon.
