Just a couple of days ago, we received the news that one of the world’s most famous hold-outs when it comes to musical reunions, ABBA, has done just that and are planning to release new music later this year. Now, one of the group’s most famous supporters has stated he’ll be pushing for the band to make their way back to Aussie shores.
On Saturday, we noted that after 35 years away from the game, ABBA are set to release two brand new songs this year, including ‘I Still Have Faith In You’, which will be performed by a hologram version of the group in December.
“It was like time had stood still and that we had only been away on a short holiday,” the group noted in a statement. “An extremely joyous experience!”
However, not long after the dust settled on this announcement, Molly Meldrum, one of the group’s biggest Aussie supporters back in the day, revealed that he’s planning to campaign for the group to tour Australia.
“I’m hoping a tour will happen,” Meldrum explained to News Corp. “I’ll certainly be pushing them – although the first time I went to Stockholm to question ABBA, they stared at me, like, ‘Does he even speak English?'”
“Their timeless songs are the soundtrack to our lives,” said Meldrum of the group’s long-lasting legacy. “They are so strong in our hearts because the songs make you feel warm inside.”
Last September, it was revealed that ABBA are set to perform in Australia in 2019 as holograms, so whether or not we get the band in the flesh, there’s set to be an ABBA tour of some kind making its way to our shores.
“It’s perfect. We can be on stage while I’m home walking the dogs,” said Benny Andersson at the time. “I don’t have to leave my house.
“If this really works there’ll be a lot of artists wanting to do the same thing, even artists who are still young and still touring. It’s a very interesting project.”
Of course, while folks are hanging out for a world tour, it might be worth exercising a little bit of caution. With the fact that ABBA have long said that they never planned to perform live again, and with their new songs being performed by way of holograms, there’s no definitive word as to whether the group will actually perform again in the flesh like we’re hoping.
Whatever happens though, you can be sure that Molly Meldrum will be there on the sidelines, having a red hot crack at convincing ABBA to come on over to Australia for the first time since 1977.
