On this day in 1996, Oasis generated a large amount of controversy with their performance at the MTV Music Awards.
Back in 1995, Oasis found themselves in the middle of a rather successful period. Having released (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?, and topped charts around the world with the success of ‘Wonderwall’, the group were fast becoming household names.
This level of popularity soon saw the group asked to perform at the 1996 MTV Music Awards in New York City, despite not having been nominated for any awards on the night.
Performing as one of the last acts for the evening, Oasis took to the stage to deliver a rendition of ‘Champagne Supernova’, their latest single at the time, though their appearance was not without controversy.
From the outset, Liam Gallagher was off-key in his performance, and appeared to be rather antagonistic towards the crowd, changing lyrics to “a champagne supernova up your bum”, and making rude gestures towards the audience.
As MTV explained of the band’s set, “During their performance of ‘Champagne Supernova,’ the band’s forever feuding Gallagher brothers got into a snit, with Liam making rude gestures at brother Noel as he was playing his guitar solo, then spitting beer all over the stage before storming off.”
While the band generated controversy for their performance, some of the band’s fans have considered the track to be one of the band’s best performances, while others have shared the opposite opinion.
Judge for yourself.
