The surviving members of Nirvana could be set to reunite once again this weekend at the Foo Fighters’ upcoming Cal Jam 18 fest.

Just last month, the surviving members of Nirvana once again teamed up for a brief reunion performance in Seattle.

With Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic’s band Giants In The Trees supporting the Foo Fighters (which features Dave Grohl and Pat Smear), the musicians teamed up for a performance of The Vaselines’ ‘Molly’s Lips’ for the first time in almost 25 years.

Now, it seems as though another reunion could be coming this weekend.

Earlier this year, the Foo Fighters announced the 2018 edition of their Cal Jam festival. Featuring the likes of Iggy Pop, Garbage, Tenacious D, Silversun Pickups, and Australia’s own Gang Of Youths, it’s set to be a pretty wild affair. However, it’s looking like it’s about to get quite exciting.

Taking to Twitter earlier, the Foo Fighters’ account posted two cryptic messages to their followers. The first was in reference to Cal Jam performer Joan Jett’s new documentary, with the group noting “CAN’T WAIT!!!! What else could we have up our sleeves???” Stay tuned….”

Then, they shared footage from the 2014 Nirvana reunion at the afterparty. Captioned with the phrase “This is a Jam @caljamfest #CalJam18,” Nirvana’s official Twitter account also shared the video.

So, that’s all well and good, but why are fans getting excited for this? Well, Nirvana’s 2014 reunion in Brooklyn happened to feature a number of guest vocalists taking over from Kurt Cobain.

With Joan Jett, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, St. Vincent, Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis, and Deer Tick’s John McAuley fronting the group, it was indeed a pretty special event.

As it turns out though, both Joan Jett and John McAuley will be present at this week’s Cal Jam fest, as will Krist Novoselic’s Giants In The Trees, meaning that folks are starting to assume a pretty special reunion might just be taking place.

Incidentally, Dave Grohl sat down with Rolling Stone a few months back to reveal that the footage of the 2014 performance will likely be released in the future.

“When we realized that we were going to do it, I just called the people from my production company and said, ‘We need to film this’,” Dave explained. “We loaded some cameras in there and and shot it without knowing what would ever come of it.”

“But it would be a shame for that evening to be only a memory and we’ve got it.”

“It was fucking great. It was cathartic and everybody involved, I think, understood that they were part of something like a dream,” he recalled. “I remember playing and looking and seeing [Sleater-Kinney’s] Carrie Brownstein in the front row in the pit singing along to every song and, you know, getting to play drums behind Joan Jett or, god, playing ‘School’ or fucking ‘Pennyroyal Tea’ with J Mascis.”

“It really was amazing. It was something else. Someday, I’m sure everybody’ll see it.”

While we won’t know whether or not a reunion will indeed be going down until this weekend, you can definitely be sure that plenty of Nirvana fans are wishing they organised a trip over to California right now.
