In the most Icelandic thing to happen since Björk forgot to respond to an email because she was herding sheep, a local hand-bell choir has recorded a six track EP of Sigur Rós covers.
Last December Sigur Rós held Norður og Niður, a music festival in Iceland. During the four day festival a local hand-bell choir Bjöllukór Tónlistarskóli performed several re-arranged tracks by the group and now they’ve recorded the covers for your listening pleasure.
The six track EP is titled Klukk – Sigur Rós in Bells and you can listen to it below via BandCamp. The EP description points out that “Klukk” is Icelandic onomatopoeia for the sound that bells make. We love a fun fact!
The artwork for Klukk was designed by Sigur Rós frontman Jonsi’s sister Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir. It “features a visual representation of the sonic wave-form of a bell viewed through old camera lens.” You can also check out performance footage of the hand-bell choir at Norður og Niður below.

Uploaded to Sigur Rós’ official YouTube, the video describes the performance as “one of the best and least predictable” performances from the festival.
Back in October drummer Orri Páll Dýrason resigned from the band after allegations of sexual assault were made against him. At the time the group’s remaining members released a statement saying “In the wake of the extremely serious and personal allegations made against him in recent days we have today accepted the resignation of our bandmate Orri Páll Dyrason to allow him to deal with this privately. ”
