Dave Navarro has hit out at US TV host Geraldo Rivera following the airing of a documentary that discussed the murder of his mother.

Back in 2015, Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro released the documentary Mourning Son. Focused on his mother’s 1983 murder and his subsequent slide into drug addiction, it was a harrowing watch, and was undoubtedly a difficult thing for the rocker to open up about.

Now, Navarro has hit back at Geraldo Rivera for discussing this tragedy without his approval in a new documentary.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday, the guitarist criticised the producers and host of Geraldo Rivera’s Murder in the Family for focusing on his mother’s death in the show’s latest episode.

“I find it really disappointing that Geraldo Rivera’s new show would ask me to participate in an episode about the tragedies in my life and when I said no, they decided to run it anyway with inaccurate facts and total abandon for the triggering effect a program of this nature could have on the families,” Navarro wrote in a since-deleted post.

“I understand that true crime is a big moneymaker, in fact I am a fan of programs such as this, but when they chase down the dollar instead of having the feelings of the loved ones in mind, that’s when I have to say something.”

“I’m personally ok as I have told this story myself in my documentary #MourningSon but this is an opportunity to stand up for the other families that don’t get a choice whether or not they have their stories told to millions without their consent!” he continued.

“As for the article that is posted – I did NOT find a body and I did NOT turns to drugs after this event. To say so, would do a great disservice to those who have lost loved ones and not turned to self medicating. I was well in my way to using drugs even before this took place.”

Dave Navarro has opened up about his past previously, having discussed mental health in the past as a way to educate others about the stigma of such issues.

Understandably, the ability and decision to speak about such topics on his own terms is of vital importance, so it’s incredibly easy to see why this recent documentary has him furious.

Neither Geraldo Rivera or his show’s producers have responded to Dave Navarro at this stage.
