A US band have become something of an online sensation, with their attempts to sell an orange beanie on eBay attracting thousands of dollars worth of bids.

Over the years, we’ve undoubtedly seen bands pull off some pretty nifty marketing stunts. Why, we’ve seen Nine Inch Nails’ Year Zero alternative reality game, and we’ve seen Aphex Twin’s deep web promotion for Syro.

However, one band who are known for their hilarious attempts to market themselves have inadvertently become one hot ticket on eBay.

If you’ve found yourself immersed in music memes over the last few years, then you might have come across Heart Attack Man.

A quartet from the US state of Ohio, the group have become somewhat iconic online for their viral videos which have been used to promote their shows.

However, as Alt Press reports, Heart Attack Man’s Eric Egan has now attempted to raise some quick cash by selling a beanie, and has become something of an internet icon in the process.

Taking to eBay to list the very same orange beanie seen in the above video, Egan says that he is regretfully selling the iconic piece of headwear.

“Hate to have to do this, but I’m strapped for cash so I am selling my orange beanie,” he began. “Featured in countless photos and videos of mine all over the internet, this is not your average everyday ordinary beanie.”

“The amount of ideas I’ve thought of while wearing this beanie is astronomical. I’ve played many shows in it. This beanie alone has left a remarkable impact on this earth. Should fit most any head size.”

Now, that’s all well and good, right? ‘Musician sells famous piece of clothing’ is hardly a story that would pique our interest, though what is shocking is just how popular this beanie has become.

Since being listed for the starting bid of $0.99 on Tuesday morning, the beanie has attracted 151 bids, driving the current price up to US $95,300 at the time of writing.

Amazingly though, the beanie still has over six days to go until the auction ends. However, given eBay’s attitude to stuff like this in the past, there is every chance that the auction may indeed be pulled down.

We’re not sure why the beanie has become so popular, but you have to admit; the internet is a wild place.
