Mitski has been forced to defend Canadian musician Mac DeMarco, explaining the similarity between their recent album titles, explaining that it was likely just a coincidence.

Back in August of 2018, American indie artist Mitski released her fifth studio album, Be The Cowboy. An absolutely stunning release, the record was named as one of the best of the year by publications around the world, gaining plenty of critical acclaim in the process for its main single, ‘Nobody’.

Earlier today, Canadian musician Mac DeMarco announced the release of his fourth studio album, Here Comes The Cowboy, dropping lead single, ‘Nobody’, in the process. If you’re starting to think that all sounds a little familiar, well, you’re not alone.

As Pitchfork explains, these similarities were noted by Mac DeMarco himself, with a spokesperson revealing that DeMarco only learnt of, and heard, Mitski’s record after had had decided upon the album title and single.

In response, Mitski took to Twitter to downplay any similarities, noting their pair likely shared the same source of inspiration.

“I’m 100% sure Mac & I just went fishing in the same part of the collective unconscious,” Mitski wrote, laughing off the similarities.

“What’s wild is we have the same PR, so I LOVE my personal conspiracy theory that she heard the album+track titles but kept quiet thinking maybe some Mac fans will mistakenly find me.”

“Anyway thanks for the laugh, Mac! Happy release!”

In regards to the origins of the album’s title, Mac DeMarco explained in a press release that “this one is my cowboy record.”

“Cowboy is a term of endearment to me, I use it often when referring to people in my life,” he continued. “Where I grew up there are many people that sincerely wear cowboy hats and do cowboy activities. These aren’t the people I’m referring to.”

Mac DeMarco’s Here Comes The Cowboy is set to be released on May 10th. Check out the lead single, ‘Nobody’, below.
