Talk of The Mars Volta’s reunion is undoubtedly heating up, with the group’s frontman promising that the group’s eventual comeback will include “new shit, new people, left turns.”
Over the weekend, the world was stunned to learn that The Mars Volta’s reunion was officially “happening”, according to a since-deleted Tweet by frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala.
Having called it quits in 2013 after more than a decade together, early 2018 saw Bixler-Zavala reveal that The Mars Volta would indeed be making a comeback at some point in the future, though he couldn’t say when.
Now, with news that the band have been in the studio together (and word that they could potentially play a Presidential inauguration down the line), we’ve now found out a little more about what this reunion will entail.
As Consequence Of Sound reports, Cedric Bixler-Zavala took to Twitter again recently to offer up more information about their reunion, downplaying the story’s importance, while reminding folks he had always said the group would get back together at some point.
“What It’s NOT going to be is your ‘fav member line up’ playing their ‘classic records’ in full etc.,” he explained. “Maybe we’ll play old shit who knows how we feel.”
“Just remember our past campaigns never relied on playing requests or going fully backwards it’s new shit, new people, left turns, tangent inconsistencies, mazapan dreams and churro wishes.”
“I will say this though, when [guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López] played me a grip of new shit I fucking cried. Like Claire Daines [sic] in Romeo & Juliet cried. Yeah it was fucking weird.”
“It’s in its infancy right now. No dead lines, No ball tripping, No drama just 2 grown ass men using essential oils and bold new perfumes shooting ideas and scooting their ass across the fucking lawn trying get rid of these worms.”
“PS: the back catalogue will be released as well and it will be high quality unlike that the fucking buffoon shit that universal bootlegged a couple years ago,” he added. “Yeah they thought they’d just ignore our contracts and make a quick buck while the band lay dormant. Don’t buy that shit.”
So what does this all mean? It means that not only will we be eventually receiving new music that is so good that it’s worth crying over, we’ll also be receiving reissued and remastered versions of their entire back catalogue.
At this stage though, the reunited lineup of The Mars Volta remains unclear, especially in regards to the position of keyboardist, which was held by Isaiah “Ikey” Owens prior to his passing in 2014.
It’s currently been seven years since the release of the band’s final album, Noctourniquet, so it goes without saying that the band’s fans are keen to hear some fresh music after all this time.
