The first trailer for the upcoming musical miniseries, Wu-Tang: An American Saga has dropped today, giving viewers an insight into the formative years of the Wu-Tang Clan.

On paper, the story of the Wu-Tang Clan is wild as the behaviour of late founding member Ol’ Dirty Bastard. A sprawling group of New York rappers founded by de facto leader The RZA, the group shot to fame in 1993 following the release of their debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

However, few would have assumed that over a quarter of a century later, the origins of this group would later be immortalised in a new television drama series.

Last year, it was revealed that Wu-Tang: An American Saga was set to premiere in the near future, after 10 episodes were ordered from the folks at Hulu, bringing writer Alex Tse into the fold, and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Television on board as executive producers, along with Method Man and The RZA.

“Set in early ’90s New York at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic, the show tracks the Clan’s formation, a vision of Bobby Diggs aka The RZA, who strives to unite a dozen young, black men that are torn between music and crime but eventually rise to become the unlikeliest of American success stories,” Deadline reported last year.

Now, we’ve had our first look at the upcoming series.

Featuring Ashton Sanders as The RZA, the aspiring musician is given the sage advice that, “If you want to make it in this world, then put in the work, OK?”, undoubtedly setting a fire underneath him that would inspire the creation of one of the most successful hip-hop crews of all time.

While it was reported last month that Joey Bada$$ had been tapped to play the role of Inspectah Deck, the cast list for the upcoming series is looking rather special, with the likes of Shameik Moore, Dave East, Siddiq Saunderson, Marcus Callender, Julian Elijah Martinez, Zolee Griggs, Erika Alexander, TJ Atoms and Johnell Young all joining the cast (as per Deadline).

Wu-Tang: An American Saga is set to premiere on Hulu on September 4th, though there’s no word yet as to when Australian viewers will get the chance to watch it.
