Albums. We all love em’, and the worlds got plenty of them to offer. So many that it feels like we’re drowning. Seriously guys, slow down, our ears can only handle so much.

Now, we’ve already made our claims on what the 10 best albums of the year are, but what about those hidden gems that you’ve probably missed?

We’ve compiled our six favourite albums from the year that have probably gone overlooked, and that also didn’t quite make our top ten list.

Who knows, these albums may just land a spot in our end of year list. At this rate, it sure looks like they will.

1. The Japanese House – Good at Falling

Amber Bain is the mastermind behind The Japanese House, releasing one of this year’s most powerfully emotional albums so far. We even got to speak to her about making personal pop for a whole generation of people who understand exactly where she’s coming from. Be sure to give this album a listen asap and check out our interview with The Japanese House here.

2. Spellling – Mazy Fly

The album cover for this project should give you all the information you need to know about this trippy and off-kilter album. Spellling, lying in a field of cows in a wedding dress and cowboy hat, making direct eye contact with you. Honestly, if that’s not enough to get you interested, then have a listen to the incredible track ‘Under the Sun’ below.

3. Kelsey Lu – Blood

One of the many gifts of the year is the emergence of Kelsey Lu, multi-talented musician with a voice that’s too perfect to ignore. Her album Blood, is an endless blend of symphonic pop that just drips with passion and mood.

4. Ari Lennox – Shea Butter Baby

Top to bottom this album is pure sex. Pure sex and pure talent. Ari Lennox has a voice like no other that just rides any kind of instrumentation perfectly. There’s no way you can ignore how smooth tracks like ‘Up Late’ sound. We’re addicted and hopefully you will be too.

5. Dreezy – Big Dreez

Dreezy isn’t one to be ignored. Rappers appear all the time to offer us up one-hit wonders and then disappear into smoke, but on Big Dreez, Dreezy proves she has staying power. This won’t be the last you hear of her, but damn if it isn’t one of the years hottest projects so far.

6. Lingua Ignota – Caligula

Damn this album is heavy. And we mean, heavy heavy. It can be so intense at times that you may need to stop for a breather, as Lingua Ignota refuses to relent throughout the project. And rightfully so, this project didn’t come to please, it came to burn the world down, and it achieves just that.
