It’s been a couple of years since Mastodon last treated their fans to a new record, and by the sounds of it, it’s come following a period of unbridled creativity for the band.
Earlier this year, US heavy metal outfit revealed to their fans that they would be releasing a “brutal” new song soon, marking their first release since 2017’s Cold Dark Place EP.
Sadly, this song never appeared, but the band revealed this was due more to timing and some unforeseen circumstances, with a European tour coming before new music could be shared.
However, while they noted they were still hoping to release their new album in 2020, it seems as though Mastodon finally have some time to get down to business, with drummer Brann Dailor revealing to radio station Razor 94.7 104.7 that the band has “too much” material for the new record.
Check out Brann Dailor’s interview:
“We have one festival in October, but we have a couple months,” Dailor explained, “and we’re kind of chomping at the bit to get in there and put together some of the ideas that have been swirling around.
“There’s lots of riffs; there’s lots of material. There’s too much material, so we need to get in there and start chipping away at that giant hunk of granite and hopefully produce a beautiful sculpture for all to see.”
Although we’re yet to receive word as to when we might hear new music, Dailor revealed earlier this year that Mastodon’s new tunes are “as heavy as I’ve heard us in a while.”
In related news, Mastodon made headlines back in February after an angry mother sent the group some angry messages, accusing the band of scamming her son.
In between sending messages calling the band “dirty cum bags [sic]” who “should be a shamed of your selved [sic],” it appeared as though the woman was in fact messaging the band under the impression they were the makers of the social media network sever also called Mastodon.
