Hey Perth. You probably already know that Troye Sivan is heading your way on 16th September – and it’s time to go back to 1999. That’s right.
Troye has always had a LIT fashion sense, and for his upcoming concert, he’s inviting you to join in on the action. The theme? 1999.
One of Troye’s biggest bops is setting the scene, and it’ll be going off both on the stage and in the crowd. With that in mind, here are five costume ideas to get you in the zone.
#5 Britney, Bitch
Troye name-drops Britney in the chorus, and with this theme in mind, now it is definitely not the time to Leave Britney Alone. Britney was a late ’90s icon and her different styles should give heaps of inspo for this theme.
Crop tops, lots of denim and schoolgirl outfits are all pretty chill options, but you can definitely go crazy too. The latex jumpsuit from the ‘Oops I Did It Again’ clip is still the tea and props go to anyone willing to shave their head and wear a hoodie to be crazy Britney.
Too much effort? Troye’s lyrics have plenty more inspo…

#4 1999 Lyrics & Video Clip
‘1999’ has plenty of throwbacks in its lyrics, so you can definitely use them as your starting point. Nike Airs, Eminem, MTV and Jonathan Taylor Thomas are just some of the ’90s name-drops that you could draw on for your look.
Blonde ‘90s Eminem is a mood. He’s recognisable but also a chill way to get into the theme. If not, an MTV logo T-shirt with Nike Airs is perfect.
The video for ‘1999’ also has a whole bunch of ‘90s pop culture references to get you thinking. Steve Jobs, Titanic, The Sims, American Beauty, The Matrix, Justin Timberlake and soooo much more feature in the clip. Get your squad together as some of these ‘90s icons! Speaking of…
#3 Group costumes
If group costumes are your thing, there are so many ‘90s squads to dress as. Sitcoms are a good place to start – Friends, Seinfeld, Will & Grace and Saved By The Bell are all iconically ‘90s and great ways to get your friends around the theme.
If you’re feeling more ambitious, get that face paint out and Simpsons it up! Backstreet Boys are great (only if You Want It That Way), but the unique ‘90s fashion sense means you can rock it as TLC, *NSYNC or The Spice Girls. Or The Wiggles. Please, someone, go as The Wiggles.
#2 90s fashion and accessories
There is nothing wrong with going back to basics and just picking out some sweet ‘90s accessories to add to any of the ideas above. Bum bags, Walkmans, cassette players, hair accessories, oval sunnies, berets, colourful snapbacks and overalls are all perf!
Flannel shirts and ripped jeans are also a good option (especially for the reluctant boyf). We’d definitely recommend hitting up Vinnies or Salvos – ‘90s looks are back in and we stan recycled farshun.
#1 Uniquely Aussie ideas
We’ve already talked about The Wiggles (how could we not?) but there are heaps of other Aussie icons from the ‘90s to get you thinking. The 2000 Olympics were just around the corner in 1999, so any Olympic costume is totally on-brand.
You could come as Olympic rings with hula hoops, or as the 2000 Olympics mascots, Syd, Millie and Oli. Or Nicki Webster?? And when in doubt, let ‘90s HEROES Heath Ledger and Elle Macpherson be your guides.
PS… If you’re feeling daring…
Who doesn’t love subverting the theme? Sometimes great costumes start when you start thinking outside the box…You could go as the number 1,999 with three other friends, or as a 19-year-old with your bestie as a 99-year-old. The possibilities are endless. Happy costuming!!
