It’s time to bust out that old Offspring tape again because Sony has just announced that the Walkman is coming back!

Ahead of the 40th birthday of the tackiest cool item you could ever own, Sony has announced that it will be releasing two upgraded models of the iconic gear (for those who know what it is).

Of course, given it’s 2019 there are gonna be some changes.

According to the folk over at GQ, both models will be compatible with Android phones and will feature an S-Master HX digital amplifier for the best quality audio (i.e. the sound will be good).

There’ll also be extra compression for better sound, a vinyl processor, a USB-C charging port, Bluetooth features, an expandable 16GB storage capacity and a 3.6” touch panel.

Not quite the vintage o.g., but hey, times change.

Aside from the audio upgrades, the only notable aesthetic difference will be the 40th-anniversary logo design.

The new item will come with a screensaver too, but that’s about as far as thing’s go.

The new models are expected to retail at around $500 US. More than the original $150 that customers paid back in 1979, but one hell of a special piece of technological and musical history.

“You can enjoy the best of both worlds with the heritage design of Walkman whilst having cutting edge technology at your fingertips,” said Sony in their press release about the item.

“You can also enjoy a cassette tape user interface that takes inspiration from classic Walkman models.”

Guess it’s time to make a mixtape for that crush of yours.
