The Beatles’ endlessly iconic Abbey Road has returned to the Number 1 spot on this week’s Official Albums Chart, setting a new UK chart record across the pond.

The legendary eleventh studio album from The Beatles has reclaimed its original top spot, with some help from a special edition release to celebrate its 50th anniversary, featuring brand new material from the recording sessions never heard before.

The record that Abbey Road has now set is the UK chart record for an album with the longest amount of time between reaching Number 1 of the Official Albums Chart. Yep, it has been 49 years and 252 days since the record was sitting lonely at the top of the charts, and now it’s back where it belongs.

The original run of Abbey Road at the top of the charts came to an official end on January 31st 1970. You can view The Beatles’ complete Official UK Chart history here.

The Beatles actually held this record before with their Sgt Pepper’s album, which had a gap of 49 years and 125 days between topping the chart, when its anniversary re-release reached Number 1 in June 2017.

Celebrating the news, Sir Paul McCartney said: “It’s hard to believe that Abbey Road still holds up after all these years. But then again it’s a bloody cool album.”

Abbey Road is also this week’s best-selling album on vinyl, shifting just under 9,000 copies on wax.
