Lizzo has been hit with her second plagiarism accusation. CeCe Peniston has accused Lizzo off ripping off her 1992 track ‘Finally’, in her song ‘Juice.’
Peniston took to Instagram to compare the ad-lib, “ya-ya-ee, ya-ya-ee”, that features in both tracks. “This is a clear example of #copyrightinfringement,” she wrote. “Cece Peniston versus @lizzobeeating, y’all check this out and btw I love her music.”
“I have a contract in place please know,” Peniston continued in the comments. “But when my rights are not being executed and license after license is being used without your consent and you’ve gone through the chain of command from the publishing company to the higher-ups and your #recouped it hasn’t been addressed then you have to be strong to speak up about.”
Peniston continued to make a follow-up post, explaining “I love #lizzos music and artistry, my concern is that lyrics and melody that I wrote in my song #finally are now a part of her song ‘Juice’ and I would like for us to resolve this in a positive manner.
Lizzo is yet to respond to the accusations. Earlier this month she was accused of plagiarism by a former collaborator, producer Justin Raisen. Raisen claims that the lyric “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch” came from a writing session between Lizzo, Raisen, Jesse Saint John, and Yves Rothman on a demo called ‘Healthy.’
“We were never contacted about being credited for the use of the parts of ‘Healthy,'” Raisen wrote. “We’ve tried to sort this out quietly for the last two years, only asking for 5% each but were shutdown every time.”
The line was allegedly inspired by a February 2017 tweet by UK singer, Mina Lioness that read, “I did a DNA test and found out I’m 100% that bitch.” Raisen explains, “A meme of that came up in our writing session & inspired the lyric and melody we wrote together.”
Lioness confronted Lizzo about it on Twitter in February 2018, sharing “We didn’t have the same idea, it was my tweet that was taken from Twitter and put into a song,” and, “Now everyone believes those were your words, when in fact they were mine. My creativity, my wit and my comedy.”
