Almost two years to the day after it was first released, US musician Lizzo has scored her first #1 single in her native country with ‘Truth Hurts’.

If you’ve looked at the world of music at any time over the last few years, there’s a very strong chance you would have seen praised heaped towards Melissa Jefferson, better known to folks as Lizzo.

Having shared a few independent releases at the start of the decade, 2013 saw the release of Lizzobangers, before it was followed up with 2015’s Big Grrrl Small World. By this point though, the world had begun to catch onto the genius of Lizzo, and after 2016’s Coconut Oil EP began to make waves, the next year saw the release of a standalone single titled ‘Truth Hurts’.

Later included on the deluxe edition of 2019’s Cuz I Love You, ‘Truth Hurts’ has this week managed to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, just one week after Lizzo performed the tune at the MTV Video Music Award, making waves the world over in the process.

While fans are undoubtedly loving this news, Billboard notes that ‘Truth Hurts’ isn’t the first song to top the charts years after its release, though it is undoubtedly rare to do so.

While UB40’s cover of ‘Red Red Wine’ topped the charts four years after its 1984 release, Chubby Checker’s version of ‘The Twist’ achieved the same feat in 1962, having previous hit #1 upon being released in 1960.

Undoubtedly though, the chart-topping power of ‘Truth Hurts’ is a huge boost for Lizzo, who explained recently how she almost packed it all in after the tune was released.

“The day I released Truth Hurts was probably one of the darkest days I’ve had ever in my career,” Lizzo recently told People. “I remember thinking, ‘If I quit music now, nobody would notice. This is my best song ever, and nobody cares.’

“I was like, ‘F— it, I’m done.’ And a lot of people rallied; my producer, my publicist and my family, they were like, ‘Just keep going because this is the darkest before the dawn.’”

In related news, fans will get a chance to get loose to ‘Truth Hurts’ early next year when Lizzo heads to Australia at part of the FOMO 2020 festival lineup.
