Apply is applying some digital Viagra to ITunes by increasing the length of music previews on the download service from 30 seconds to 90 seconds. Such a change by Apple has been subject to rumours for aeons, but it only recently sent a letter to music labels informing them of the change.

The letter informs them, “We are pleased to let you know that we are preparing to increase the length of music previews from 30 seconds to 90 seconds on the iTunes Store in the United States. We believe that giving potential customers more time to listen to your music will lead to more purchases.”

In theory, this will lead to increased purchases through iTunes, as provided the song lasts more than two minutes and thirty seconds, potential purchasers will get a ninety second preview. Unfortunately for The Ramones, this will exclude most of their catalogue.
