Formerly Melbourne Goth, Melbs Goth, Melbs wav and now Melbs bb, Erica Lilly is the dream-pop gem straight from Victoria with a penchant for hazy, languid tracks straight out of a dream. We just had to know more about her as she launches her career into the stars (no pun intended) with her brand new track ‘Astrology (clothesline)’.
With an indie-rock number that evokes memories of luminaries such as Clairo and Beach House, ‘Astrology (clothesline)’, Melbs bb’s brand new track, is a hazy mix of guitar, synth, and the stunning vocals from Melbs bb herself.
It’s a stunning introduction to the artist, who with two tracks under her belt now is on the way to sharing the crown of the dreamy pop heroines come before her.
And what’s not to love about that incredible video for ‘Astrology (clothesline)’, which absolutely destroys every single star sign with a perfect set of hilarious video clips. As a Sagittarius, I’ve never felt more seen in my life.
We sat down with Melbs bb to get to know her just a bit better, chatting about astrology, Snoop Dogg, and being a huge nerd.
You can listen to ‘Astrology (clothesline)’ below.

It went through a few different versions but basically I wanted it to be very personal so it always had Melbourne in the name because Melbs has shaped me in a whole host of ways (like a horrific caffeine addiction as one example) Originally it was Melbourne Goth (I used to be very Tumblr-y), then it was Melbs Goth, then it was Melbs wav and now it’s Melbs bb. I am a bit of an overgrown kid and baby is an adorable way to say emotionally stunted.
How would you describe your music to your grandma?
Both my grandmas were Hungarian but let’s go with English for this question. It jumps around but mostly it’s sort of lush, atmospheric pop and there are guitars sometimes. Sometimes a bit more electronic/computery sounding too. And there’s always lots of feelings.
Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about?
Well, my latest single Astrology (clothesline) is about my astrology chart and poking fun, because my love life is so doomed, but I tried to put a positive spin on it. My first song ‘Say’ was about my love life, because it’s SO doomed, but I tried to put a positive on it. My next single isn’t titled as of yet but it’s about, you guessed it…depression. Surprise! Not all my songs are about boys…just most of them
What do you love about your hometown?
I love how diverse it is. You drive 30 minutes in any direction and it looks like you’re in a completely different city. It’s pretty magical that way. The coffee and food are also very good. VERY good.
Career highlight so far?
Being played on triple j. I grew up on the JJJs and I know some people don’t think it’s a big deal, or worse that it’s a shallow aspiration, but I love triple j and to be an artist played on that station really means something to me. I had a massive cry when I found out. I’m shattered I didn’t hear my song live the first time because turns out I didn’t have Twitter notifications turned on (I have since changed that).
Fave non-music hobby?
Not sure if people would class it as a hobby but I’m a huge nerd and my whole life is just me researching various things. It’s mostly useless but comes in handy sometimes when you need to impress other nerds. Doctors LOVE me. Also, invite me to your trivia night.
What’s on your dream rider?
Just the basics: gin, some tonic to go with the gin, hot chips and sauce, a pool table, a masseuse, a genie in a bottle. I’m easy.
Dream music collaboration?
Sufjan Stevens. He doesn’t really leave his house though and neither do I so this one will probably stay a dream.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Working from home with the odd tour here and there. I really hope I can get to the point where I can live off music and the other creative stuff I do. I guess I might have kids and stuff but mostly, I want to be able to live my life in pyjamas. That’s the dream.
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
‘Gin and Juice’ by Snoop Dogg. With so much drama in the LBC, it only makes sense to pick this song at any and every given opportunity.
What’s on the cards for the future?
The next thing on the list is to knock the single launch at the Workers on Feb 27 out of the park so my full focus is on that. After that, I’ll definitely release another single in the next couple of months and might maybe have an EP coming out later this year.
