Neil Young became an American citizen in January and now he’s posted an open letter to President Trump. It begins, “You are a disgrace to my country,” and doesn’t let up from there.
Young’s application for American citizenship was delayed due to his long time marijuana use. But the Canadian born musician has lived in America through most of his professional career. Not a lot of critical analysis is needed to understand why Young might object to Trump’s leadership. For one thing, Young’s a passionate environmentalist, which is one of the first points raised in the letter.
“Your mindless destruction of our shared natural resources, our environment and our relationships with friends around the world is unforgivable,” writes Young. “Your policies, decisions and short term thinking continue to exacerbate the Climate Crisis.”

Trump famously withdrew the US from the Paris climate agreement. After much bluster, he initiated the formal 12-month withdrawal process last November.
Young also blasts Trump’s repeated boasts about his economic handling, despite the figures being the same as when Obama was in office. “Our first black president was a better man than you are,” says Young. He also takes a swipe at Trump for playing ‘Keep On Rockin’ in the Free World’ at his vulgar rallies.
“Every time ‘Keep On Rockin’ in the Free World’ or one of my songs is played at your rallies, I hope you hear my voice,” writes Young. “Remember it is the voice of a tax-paying US citizen who does not support you. Me.”

In case you’re wondering who Young does support, he voices approval for Democratic primary contender Bernie Sanders. “One of your opponents has the answers I like,” says Young. “He is truly fighting for the USA. His initials are BS. His policies are not.”
