Indie heartthrobs Sports Team are on the precipice of dropping their highly-anticipated debut record, Deep Down Happy, set for release on Friday, April 3rd. The band recently dropped a delicious new single and video in the form of ‘Here’s The Thing’. The track is a sunny slice of indie heaven. The exact kind of ebullient anthem we need to fight off the glumness of the times, Sports Team may just be the most charming band willed into existence.
To celebrate the single, and the eventual release of Deep Down Happy, we sent Sports Team frontman Alex Price through a few burning questions. So pop on the track and see what they had to say for themselves below.

How did your artist name come about?
Believe me, there were so many worse options. We probably thought it evoked a bit of that sense that we’re a gang. Ultimately it’s just hard to google though.
How would you describe your music to your grandma?
We’re extremely popular, people consider us the voice of our generation.
Love Music?
Get your daily dose of metal, rock, indie, pop, and everything else in between.

Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about?
The whole album is called Deep Down Happy. We’ve all lived together in London, moved out, slept 6 to a room to write and rehearse this album, now we’ve moved back. It’s really just a weighing up of whether we’re happy. Are we still friends? Is this what we wanted?
The first and the last track have this line ‘if you want to find love you can always move to London’ bookending the album. That sums it up.
Camel Crew – We first recorded a version of this with a producer called Dave McCracken at his old Timberyard in Hammersmith. He used to let us go down after work and sit around for hours. Wouldn’t be here without him. I think he’s on tour with Ian Brown now. It’s about the self-congratulatory nature of this London scene of guitar music we first started playing in. Think plenty were offended but I’m sure they’ll be fine. All the love in the world to anyone that forms a band.
What do you love about your hometown?
We’re from all over the UK, Cornwall, Leeds, Kent, Chesham, but I guess we’re all in London now. Very unsure about Camberwell, feels a bit bougie – lots of young pros. We used to live in West London together though and that was great, the Irish and Portuguese communities around there were the ones – there’s something quite fulfilling about being accepted at Angies and Sporting Clube de Londres up the road. Sure the matriarch there Paula overcharged us for our steak towers every time but always with a smile.
Career highlight so far?
A few hours at the Laurieston in Glasgow, a handful of big shows, going to the US for the first time. It’s all great.
Fave non-music hobby?
I played cricket when I was a kid, had a youth contract as a fast bowler at Kent, was ultimately very quick and very inaccurate. Haven’t played for ages but I’d love to. It’s a comfortingly rhythmic game.
What’s on your dream rider?
Backstage we’re still burdened with the only rider we ever submitted, the first time we were ever asked, at a festival in Nantes. Local wine, cheeses, baguette, cured meats – a sensible option in the Loire, eccentric in Britain, no one got round to changing it. We once got Buckfast in Glasgow though which was a nice touch.
Now we get scratch cards, facemasks and salad. I’d like a fish tank and 40-over aged kookaburra, one of those replacement balls they bring out when it gets misshapen. If it doesn’t reverse we’re not playing.
Dream music collaboration?
Tina Turner
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Bitter enemies feuding over rights on a £10 royalty check for a Goal of the Year compilation someone’s put together on Youtube. Ultimately still endearing though and probably playing Wembley.
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
Robbie Williams – ‘Let Me Entertain You’
