Earlier this month, the legends over at Dew Process announced their latest signees, West London indie-rock six-piece, Sports Team. The band recently dropped a jaunty new single ‘Fishing’. ‘

‘Fishing’ arrives with a fresh Kris Rimmer-directed video, which you can check out below. The band have one EP under their belts, the fantastically cynical and self-aware Winter Nets. Produced by Dave McCracken — who has previously cut his teeth working with Ian Brown and Depeche Mode, it’s a real humdinger of a release.

To celebrate the band finding their Australian label familia, we sent them through a few quick ‘get to know’ questions. So without further ado, get to know Sports Team.

How did your artist name come about?

To us, it seemed like it evoked some of the spirit of playing together as a gang. Ultimately it’s just made us hard to google.

How would you describe your music to your grandma?

Rock

Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about?

The first track we wrote was Stanton. It’s about the fire warden at our college who was ex-military and plunged into this prosaic situation of trying to corral annoyed kids out into the fields.

I think most of our songs address the really mundane bits of suburban life and try to romanticise it through the characters.

What do you love about your hometown?

We’re from all over the UK but all shared a house in Harlesden NW London. We liked Angies, Sporting Clube de Londres and the simmering sense of threat to life in the area.

Career highlight so far?

Felix from the Maccabees got us down to launch the England cricket World Cup kit to some bemused corporates. That was up there. Ultimately all the big headline shows in London win out though. Always a carnival.

Fave non-music hobby?

Carpentry. Never tried it but it seems super.

What’s on your dream rider?

The first time we ever actually got to submit a rider was in France where we asked for local wine and cheese. No one has been bothered to change it since so that’s thrown up some odd ones. Cheddar and Buckfast in Glasgow was good.

Dream music collaboration?

Bon Scott era AC/DC

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Robbie at Knebworth has always been the goal. I hope the crowd stays young too.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Mac Davis – It’s Hard to be Humble
