There is nothing in this world I find more admirable than System of a Down and their total apathy towards fans pleas for new music. I think it shows real character that the band are constantly berated with questions about recording new music, to which they almost always respond with the verbal equivalent of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Drummer John Dolmayan recently appeared on Paltrocast, where he discussed everything from hair metal, the enduring legacy of John Bonham and whether new SOAD music is on the cards.
When asked what the future has in store for the band, Dolmayan revealed “Probably just touring. I don’t see us recording – we’re pretty stupid about that. We haven’t released an album in 15 years, and I think the people in my band are more stubborn or less stubborn, so it’s pretty unlikely.”
The sentiments were echoed in an interview Dolmayan did on the Let There Be Talk podcast, where the drummer revealed that he has little hope that another full-length System of a Down project will ever be finished.
“I find it very unlikely. I’m not even sure I wanna do it anymore,” Dolmayan explained. “It’s just so much drama and bullshit. In a lot of ways, I’m just over it.”
He continued to explain that he had “fought really hard to get [System] to make an album” during the intervening period since ‘Mesmerize’ and ‘Hypnotize’.
“More than anybody else, I was calling people, ‘Let’s get together. Put the egos aside. Let’s have meetings. Whatever it takes. Let’s get in the studio. Let’s just get in the studio and see what happens.’ I just couldn’t get it done. I failed.”

In the meantime, SOAD fans can rejoice in the knowledge that Serj Tankien will be dropping “an EP of rock songs that’s gonna be out this year.”
“Originally I had these songs in mind for a System record if we were to end up doing a System record,” he explained in a recent interview with Spin. “But as we could not really see eye to eye on how to go forward with that I decided to finish them off myself and release them as an EP.”
