Illy destroys a pub meal in minutes for triple j’s Quarantune challenge

As pubs begin to slowly open up across Australia, Illy has dropped a tune that’ll be sure to get you salivating ahead of that first bite into your first post-coronavirus chicken parmigiana.

The rapper is the latest act to step up for Hobba & Hing’s Quarantune challenge on triple j Drive, and he was tasked with writing a song called ‘Parmas In June’.

For the uninitiated, taking up the challenge means writing and recording a song, plus shooting a video clip, in just 24 hours and theming it around triple j listening suggestions.

This week the topical point was a return to the pub, and a tribute to the humble but brilliant chicken parma (or parmi if you want to be more correct).

While Illy refused to take sides in with the parma/parmi debate that divides Australia, it’s ‘parmi’ because that’s literally how to spell parmigiana and I’m sorry to all Victorians reading this but I’m willing to die on this island and my mind cannot be changed on the matter.

Back to the music… listeners also requested that Illy address the art of wearing trackies even after restrictions are lifted, and the struggles of not being able to tour as an artist. In just 24 hours he pulled off a pretty catchy effort, and I can’t stop humming that chorus line!

The lyrics really hit deep too… ‘I can’t wait for parmas in June / With my mates down at the local ’til we’re carried out the room.’

“For anyone that goes and tries to trash it, I’m aware this is a ridiculous song,” said Illy, has he introduced the track to Hobby & Hing on Friday. “But, I actually think it’s a really cool song and we nailed the sentiment that regular life is the things you really miss.”

The tune was produced, mixed and mastered by Cam Bluff, while the clip was shot and edited by Ryan Sauer Media.
