Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ former guitarist Josh Klinghoffer has joined forces with his former bandmate Flea on for a new single under his Pluralone alias.
Klinghoffer exited the Red Hot Chili Peppers in December last year after ten years with the band, after John Frusciante rejoined the group after quitting in 2009.
Using his exit from the band and lockdown as an excuse to get stuck into creating new music, Klinghoffer enlisted the help of Flea, as well as former Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons, who both feature on ‘Nowhere I Am.’
“Nowhere I Am’ is one of those songs I feel has a universal message that everyone can understand, then I remember how abstruse I can write sometimes,” Klinghoffer explained in an interview with SPIN.
“I swear at some point, it was about something we all feel. Maybe the last verse is a little pompous, writing about walking around Paris in May. As usual, rely on the chords and melody to carry songs sometimes when the lyrics don’t offer an easy in.”
“These songs were 15 and 16 (out of 17) on the list of importance (I guess) from the To Be One With You sessions, but I’m very glad they’re coming out. Flea plays great bass on ‘Nowhere I Am,” Klinghoffer added.
At the time of Klinghoffer’s exit and Frusciante’s return at the end of last year, the Red Hot Chili Peppers released a statement over social media, saying they were “grateful” for their time with Klinghoffer.

“The Red Hot Chili Peppers announce that we are parting ways with our guitarist of the past ten years, Josh Klinghoffer,” the statement began.
“Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love. We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us,” they said, adding, “We also announce, with great excitement and full hearts, that John Frusciante is rejoining our group.”
In a later interview with Ultimate Guitar, Klinghoffer was asked whether or not there were any hard feelings between him and the rest of the band.
“I don’t think so. Not from me,” he replied.
‘Nowhere I Am’/’Directrix’ single will be released on July 3 on Bandcamp and will be on vinyl coming July 17. You can preorder it here.
