Kiss kissed goodbye to 2020 with a special NYE show and it looks like it was a big success judging by the records they’ve broken.
As per Ultimate Classic Rock, the band confirmed that ‘Kiss 2020 Goodbye’ had set two world records, with verification also pending on a third.
Kiss had been aiming to make it into the Guinness World Records for their show and they done it in style. Their spectacular fireworks display – almost definitely better than the horror event that was New York City’s NYE fireworks event – set the record for both the highest flame projection in a music concert (35 metres) and the most flame projections launched simultaneously in a music concert.
Guinness World Records had sent one of their own adjudicators to take in the show and he confirmed the records immediately after the performance ended so we know it’s legit. The third pending record is for the highest-grossing pay-per-view event for a rock concert but that wasn’t able to be firmly confirmed as of yet. “We still need to review the evidence,” the adjudicator said. “Good luck, guys.”
Kiss will really be hoping that they did achieve the feat though given the hefty cost of just putting on the performance: ‘Kiss 2020 Goodbye’ cost a casual $10 million to stage, which is what happens when you want to try and blind people with a myriad of pyrotechnics.
It was a vintage Kiss performance with a few minor adjustments to suit the location of United Arab Emirates. The sight of Gene Simmons’ classic blood-spitting was missing to meet the country’s strict decency laws. ‘Virgin soul’ was replaced by ‘sacred soul’ in the song ‘God of Thunder’ and ‘bitch’ was removed altogether from ‘100,000 Years’. With a fine of $2,700 (or even jail) for such profanities, Kiss probably couldn’t afford it after all those fireworks anyway.
