In today’s Kurt Cobain news, a small number of his precious locks have sold for a large amount of money at a recent auction.
To be precise, six strands of his hair, no more and no less have been sold off to a new home for the price tag of more than $14,000. According to the official auction listing via Iconic Auctions, it actually sold for a grand total of $14,145. The minimum starting bid was also $25o0.
The hair was also mounted on a 8.5” x 11” sheet, with the largest piece of hair measuring approximately at approximately 6.3cm.
How were theses strands of hair acquired you may be wondering? Well according to TMZ, the strands of hair date back to a haircut Cobain got in 1989 while he was on the tour of Nirvana’s iconic Bleach tour.
The haircut was done by his friend, Tessa Osbourne in Birmingham, England, where Osbourne held onto the small number of locks in a bag.
According to Iconic Auctions, they spoke on the significance of Osbourne’s haircut. They said, “When it came to Kurt, Tessa was kind of what like Astrid Kirchherr had been to the Beatles—the woman who had given him his iconic haircut. She even had a series of pictures to prove it: a snapshot of her and Kurt with long straggly hair while she held a pair of scissors high, then a shot of the scissors going through about 7” of hair.”
Osbourne then gave the hair to Seattle artist, Nicole DePolo around the time after Cobain’s death. DePolo didn’t hold onto the locks however. She then passed them on the John Reznikoff who you may or may noto know as the Guinness World Record holder for the largest collection of historic hair.

It appears that Reznikoff no longer wished to hold onto the hair for whatever reason (which is not reported). And that’s how it ended up at the auction house.
