In very sad news we’ve had word that Trish Keenan of UK underground legends Broadcast passed away. Tragically, she was just 41. A statement from her record company, Warp, said “It is with great sadness we announce that Trish Keenan from Broadcast passed away at 9am this morning [Friday] in hospital. She died from complications with pneumonia after battling the illness for two weeks in intensive care.” It is further understood that the complications may have resulted from the H1N1 ‘swine flu’ virus which she may have picked up while returning from a tour of Australia last month. Warp also said “This is an untimely tragic loss and we will miss Trish dearly – a unique voice, an extraordinary talent and a beautiful human being. Rest in peace.”

Broadcast formed in Birmingham in the UK’s Midlands in 1995, Keenan joined by guitarist Tim Felton, bassist James Cargill, keyboardist Roj Stevens and drummer Steve Perkins. They were celebrated for their synthy keyboard based dark pop with which they married Keenan’s 60s girl group style vocals. Broadcast toured Australia last month, playing the Meredith Music Festival and several headline shows. The band did a Q&A with us showing much grace and humour which you can read here and Carbie Warbie was at their final Melbourne gig to take snaps, which you can see here. Trish even used one of Carbie’s pictures of her as her Facebook profile picture up until her untimely passing. Sincerest condolences to family, friends and fans.
