Powderfinger’s rumoured reunion looks to be the real deal.

The Australian mainstays have broken their silence amid mounting reunion speculation, sharing a cryptic new video on their official Instagram account that leaves little doubt about their involvement in the mysterious campaign sweeping Australia.

The band shared a video featuring the same scrambled letters and numbers that have appeared across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane this week.

“Time keeps the ledger. Every rehearsal. Kilometre. Flight. Soundcheck. Stage. Encore. Album. Failure. Accolade. Conflict. Audience,” the caption begins. “Every year. Every minute. Every second.

“The numbers never stop. They accumulate. They become evidence. Not fame. Not hype. Not headlines.”

It concludes with perhaps the biggest hint yet: “Everything else is a variable. Add enough time to enough variables and something extraordinary happens…”

As Rolling Stone AU/NZ previously reported, mysterious billboards and light displays began appearing across the country on Tuesday, featuring a series of numbers and statistics seemingly referencing the band’s career.

Among the clues were references to their seven studio albums, 18 ARIA Awards and the date November 13th, 2010, when they played their final show at Brisbane’s Riverstage.

A new Instagram account, @thereturnoftheelectrichorsemen, also emerged, referencing “(Return of) the Electric Horseman”, the closing track from the band’s 1996 album Double Allergic. The account has since shared several cryptic posts, including one featuring lyrics from Neil Young’s “Powderfinger”, the song that inspired the band’s name.

The band called time on their career in 2010 after more than two decades together, signing off with the mammoth ‘Sunsets’ farewell tour. Then in May 2020, all five members came together remotely for the ‘One Night Lonely’ livestream, raising more than $500,000 for Support Act and Beyond Blue.
