After paying tribute to Pulp during their headlining performance at the Reading Festival on the weekend, The Strokes unveiled a surprise guest to duet with sex god front man Julian Casablancas – none other than fellow sex god, Pulp front man Jarvis Cocker!
Casablancas told the crowd “We love and respect them, give it up for Pulp. And here he is, the Jarv, please welcome Mr Jarvis Cocker.” The two then took on the vocals for a cover of The Cars’ ‘Just What I Needed’, vocal licks and contrasting Cockers dry Sheffield delivery with Casablancas’ laconic New Yoik drawl.
The gig was an important one for The Strokes, with their latest album failing to set the charts on fire or gain them any new fans, and their set drew heavily on their now 10 year old debut album Is This It?, with almost half the setlist taken from their iconic debut.
Casablancas appeared somewhat worse for wear on stage at times, although that’s often part of his charm. Check out the setlist below and footage of he and Jarvis Cocker performing a duet.
