Gotye (lesser known by his birth name Wally De Backer) is the extremely talented Melbournian muso who has given popular music back its validity and a cultural purpose. It’s no surprise that both Gotye’s previous album ‘Drawing Blood’ and his latest release ‘Making Mirrors’ are currently both in numerous current music charts. Both albums are relatively experimental in terms of musical arrangements, however it is the eloquent lyricism of these timeless songs which cause listeners to relate, remember and listen yet again.
Twelve honest, dynamic and genuinely brilliant tracks make up what is Gotye’s muchly anticipated 2011 album ‘Making Mirrors’. From the instrumental opening track Making Mirrors, through to the tales of lost love in Somebody That I Used To Know and then of course the fun-loving, lively tracks such as I Feel Better, Gotye’s latest collection leads the listener through an intense journey of sound and emotion. Combining numerous genres such as Motown, sixties swing and soul, Gotye manages to put his own spin on any tune to make it recognisable as his own. It proves to anyone listening that not all pop music has been bombarded with horribly overproduced sounding auto-tune techniques and that having an orchestral accompaniment to a pop song is not a pretentious or outdated concept.
Put simply, Gotye has an extreme talent for making music and as a result, we will be looking back at the name ‘Gotye’ in a decade or so, remembering what real popular music should sound like.
