Barely two months after lead vocalist and guitarist Caleb Followill’s boozy breakdown onstage in Dallas, Kings Of Leon have returned to the stage, as planned, in Vancouver and announced an extra show for their Australian tour in November.
Effectively ending their last tour with the words, “I’m gonna go backstage and I’m gonna vomit, I’m gonna go drink a beer,” Caleb was apparently urged by his brothers and cousin – the rest of Kings Of Leon – to enter rehab, although the official line from their representatives has been one of “exhaustion”. It was the second hiccup on the world tour: the first being drummer Nathan Followill’s earlier arm injury.
After a twelve year career that commenced with exciting promise, the boys have become as well known for their rise from religious, poverty-stricken, Southern upbringing to debauched rock’n’roll lifestyles and family in-fighting as they have their talent. Diversions into a clothing line and the perceived commercialisation of their sound (“Sex On Fire” anyone?) have left the band open to worldwide criticism and now a Showtime documentary Talihina Sky spotlights the behind-the-scenes tension. In one scene, which was,incredibly, shot by Nathan on his camera phone, the drummer screams at Caleb: “You’re a piece of shit and your band cannot fucking stand you!”
Irrespective of whether Caleb has even had time to get treatment for his alleged drinking issues, or if Nathan’s arm has completely healed, Kings Of Leon return to Australia in November. Hopefully this tour will see a re-invigoration of the group and be the fresh start and return to their roots that fans are waiting for.
