When Tone Deaf caught up with one half of weezer for their first Australian tour in 16 years this past January, we pressed them about the possibility of doing another weezer Cruise, the 2012 seafaring musical adventure that saw the American ‘geek rock’ pioneers cruising between Miami and the Gulf of Mexico with a shipful of bands and events.

“Well the first one went really well,” said bassist Scott Schriner of the event, which the band named among their Top 20 career highlights, “so usually when things go well…” True to their teasing word, weezer announced plans for a second chartered voyage in weezer Cruise 2014, and now they have revealed the musical shipmates that’ll be joining them on their newest voyage.

Sailing from Jacksonville, Florida to the Bahamas from February 13th to 17th 2014, topping the list of support bands is Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power, Toro Y Moi, DIIV, The Cribs, Ash, Palma Violets, Holy Fuck, Bleached, Caveman, The Orwells, Ozma, The Relationship, and Adam Devine from Workaholics.

Cat Power will be opening for weezer in a special stopover at their own private island in Nassau for a beachside concert (hello, ukelele), while the rest of the acts will be playing onboard the cruise for various sets across the five-day, four-night voyage, with weezer themselves playing two sets aboard the Carnival Fascination. Cat Power will be opening for weezer in a special stopover at their own private island in Nassau for a beachside concert, while the rest of the acts will be playing onboard the cruise for various sets…

The oceanic music festival has a pretty impressive mix of bands, imagine chilling poolside to the sounds of Toro Y Moi, or watching the lapping waves to a soundtrack of shoegaze revivalists DIIV. Irish rockers Ash and British brothers The Cribs are sure to peak the energy, alongside the punk assault of (forthcoming Splendour act) Palma Violets, while longterm weezer diehards will be climbing the main sails at the news that Cali-geek rockers Ozma, who played aboard weezer’s maiden voyage, will effectively be reforming for the new Cruise.

There’s plenty to do above and below deck besides enjoying the music too, following the model of the first weezer Cruise, there’s also a Q&A with the band, an interactive game show, photo sessions, a 24 hour pizzeria, complimentary meals, room service, casino, cocktail party, and more.

Reservations for weezer Cruise 2014 are already starting to sell out, but tickets are still available with pricing starting at US$ 599 per person, with a minimum deposit needed for all and any bookings.

Considering it took weezer 16 years to make their second-ever visit to Australian shores, who knows how long it will be before they make a return trip? Meaning the 2014 Cruise may be the best way to scratch that weezer-sized itch. The four-piece were in Australia in January, playing their landmark self-titled debut live, in full around the country, as well as a special one-off show at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre where they played their equally influential sophomore album, 1996’s Pinkerton, in full – fronted by a fan-savvy setlist of hits and rarities.

The Pinkerton show earned a rave write-up from our Tone Deaf reviewer, reporting that the “audience who got the chance to witness something they never thought they ever could – even if it’s for the first and last time  – they leave in their wake a perfect night of wish fulfilment.”

By the looks of the lineup of weezer Cruise 2014, it’s certainly looking to do some wish fulfilling of its own.
