Melodious, tranquil, and plain delightful are all words that describe After The Disco, the second record from Broken Bells. The musical partnership, comprised of Brian Burton (Danger Mouse) and James Mercer (The Shins), will leave you feeling both happy and in need of a cuddle.

The band’s idea to create and release Part One: Angel And The Fool, a short film/album teaser based on the story of Burton, was an innovative move that should not go unnoticed. The tracks from After The Disco accompany the video perfectly and create an enchanting mood that’s sure to stay with you long after the credits roll.

The record effortlessly flows with catchy choruses, big hooks, and some pretty fantastic synth solos.  However, it does lean on the safe side, with a tendency to sound reminiscent of the band’s self-titled 2010 release.

Still, there’s something to be said for choosing what works and building upon this pre-existing sound, even if it is only in baby steps, and that is exactly what Broken Bells have done here.

‘No Matter What You’re Told’ draws upon more of an indie sound and gives the record flair, while ‘Lazy Wonderland’ makes you reach back into the deep corners of your mind for your happiest memory, the type that conjures up a big, silly smile. It’s a record that evokes emotional responses, which has to count for something. On the whole, Broken Bells stay true to their sound on this sophomore release.
