The Porkers Back On Soundwave 2014 Lineup?
By this time tomorrow, the full Soundwave 2014 Lineup will be with us with roughly 63 bands to be revealed for the bill and it now appears that Newcastle ska band The Porkers will be on the bill, making amends with Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah. The news arrives just days after it was revealed that Maddah had dumped a “seminal Aus ska band” from the bill after their management played “hardball” in negotiations. But the frontman for the band, Pete Porker – who the Soundwave honcho described as a “dear friend” – says that he has reached out to Maddah following the incident and that relations are now “all good… I have personally spoken to AJ and things have been patched up and we are looking forward to being part of the Soundwave announcement,” says Parker. The Soundwave 2014 slot will mark the reunion of the vintage Aus ska group, who join the already leaked likes of ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and The Bennies on the Soundwave 2014 Lineup (via FasterLouder)
Beatles Concert Promoter Sid Bernstein Dies, Aged 95
Legendary concert promoter Sid Bernstein, the man responsible for bringing The Beatles to New York’s Shea Stadium in 1965 and in turn crucial to the British Invasion of the US in the early 60s, has died at 95 years of age. Following a tour of duty with the Army during World War II, Bernstein learned of Beatlemania, and soon convinced the band’s manager Brian Epstein to bring the band to the US for the first time in 1964 for a run of shows at Carnegie Hall, then again in ’65 for their concert at Shea, the Beatles’ first ever stadium show. While Bernstein is most known for his work with the Fab Four, he also worked with classic British groups of the 60s such as The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and the Animals, as well as breaking down racial bigotry in promoting concerts for James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. Bernstein is survived by his wife, Geraldine, and six children. (via BBC)
Philadelphia Grand Jury To Reform?
Simon ‘Berkfinger’ Berkelman, the former frontman of Sydney trio Philadelphia Grand Jury has some good news: he could be getting the band back together. Berkfinger, who has been focussing on his solo project, Feelings, since the Philly Jays called it a day in 2011, uploaded a selfie to Facebook where he’s cramped in frame alongside former bandmates, drummer Dan Williams and bassist Joel ‘MC Bad Genius’ Beeson’, and some mics. “Just a couple of old friends, rehearsing some new songs and maybe one old one…Philadelphia Grand Jury,” reads the caption under the photo. Berkfinger has been bunkered down in a self-made Berlin studio over the better part of two years working on material for Feelings, but hadn’t necessarily ruled out a reformation considering the band’s rotating lineup policy, as he told Tone Deaf in an interview last year. Archie Roach, Russell Morris Added To National Registry
Future generations will be able to enjoy the sounds of Indigenous songwriter Archie Roach, Russell Morris’ 60s hit ‘The Real Thing’, and the wry tones of radio presenters Roy & Hg as they are preserved in the Australian archives. All are amongst the latest additions to the National Film and Sound Archive’s ‘Sounds Of Australia’ (formerly the National Registry of Recorded Sound). Other musical inclusions are surf rock staple ‘Bombora’ by The Atlantics and Peter Allen’s iconic anthem, ‘I Still Call Australia Home’. Amazing to think it wasn’t in the ‘Sounds of Australia’ archive already, but then again, AC/DC’s classic ’75 single ‘It’s A Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)’ was only just added last year. Calling All Cars Drop New Track
Melbourne trio Calling All Cars have just released the first taste of a brand new studio album, the first from the rock group since 2011’s Dancing With A Dead Man, which broached the ARIA Top 20. ‘Raise The People’ features the band’s crunchy way with a naggingly effective guitar riff as well as Haydn Ing’s roaring half-yelp, half-melodic delivery against the backdrop of the vicious drumming of his brother James and bassist Adam Montgomery. Calling All Cars have been hunkered down in the studio at work on their third album, with more details to be revealed soon; ’til then take a listen to their punchy new track below.
