We’ve previously noted the level of talent and originality that’s been on display during this year’s triple j Like A Version series, especially from our homegrown local bands and artists like Dorsal Fins, with their cover of Kate Ceberano’s ‘Pash’ and E^st’s recent cover of The Verve’s ‘Bittersweet Symphony’.

We’ve also seen some rousing calls-to-arms, an alt-rock mash-up that blew us away, some ambitious takes on mega-tunes by the likes of FKA twigs, Jamie xx, and Fatboy Slim, as well as a raw take on a homegrown anthem.

That’s why you’ve got to hand it to Melbourne’s favourite pop crew Alpine, who certainly faced some stiff competition when they entered the triple j studios this morning to record a cover of Aussie singer-songwriter Ben Lee’s 1998 classic ‘Cigarettes Will Kill You’.

Whilst the cover features faithful instrumentation and some stunning vocals from the duo of Phoebe Baker and Lou James, the rendition doesn’t quite reach the heights you want it to so badly and just makes us hunger for that drawling Ben Lee original.
