In tragic news, Andrew ‘Greedy’ Smith, the beloved frontman of seminal new wave act Mental as Anything, has passed away. He was 63. Smith passed after suffering a heart attack yesterday (December 2nd.)

“It is with an incredibly heavy heart to announce that one of the founding members of Mental As Anything, Andrew Greedy Smith passed away last night from a heart attack,” the band shared in a statement.

Greedy, the only remaining member of the group and was currently on a national tour.

Our grief and confusion at this time are little compared to what Andrew’s family will be feeling – our hearts and prayers go out to them.

Andrew is survived by his son Harvey, fiancée Fiona Docker and brother Stuart.

Reg Mombasa, Greedy Smith, Martina Plaza, Wayne ‘Bird’ Delisle and Peter O’Doherty formed Mental as Anything in 1997. Throughout their illustrious career, the band released a slew of singles that have been entrenched in the DNA of Australian music, such as ‘If You Leave Me Can I Come Too’ and ‘The Nips Are Getting Bigger’.

As well as carving out a legacy as the frontman of Australia’s favourite pub circuit band, Smith was an extraordinarily popular television personality. Regularly featuring on tv shows Hey Hey It’s Saturday and Spicks and Specks.
