Angie is a Sydney-based musician whose guises include Circle Pit, Southern Comfort, Ruined Fortune and Straight Arrows.

Her just-released solo album Turning was greatly inspired by  her travels in North America, Croatia, Cambodia, Turkey as well as everyday life in Australia. Most recently Angie spent time in Brazil doing a musical residency called  Fazenda Sao Joao aimed at fostering creativity.

While in the sunny tropics, we asked Angie to fill us in on some of her favourite Brazilian music and what we got was everything from ’60s tropicalia to some newer jams. Check it out!

Sebastiao Tapajos & Pedro Dos Santos – ‘Tornei A Caminhar’

I love every track on this album, and volume 1, but I don’t know anything about the band! Only that it’s awesome guitar playing.

Nana Vasconcelos – ‘Africadeus’

Nana might be my favourite out of this list. I have been watching videos of him performing live recently, and its really inspiring the way he commands so much presence, with just his voice, and the rhythm he conjures out of an instrument. He plays the Berimbau but is known primarily for being a drummer. This video is just mesmerising!

Jupiter Maca – ‘Miss Lexotan’

I love Jupiter Maca, it’s so weird. The album ‘ A Sétima Efervescência‘ especially. Apparently his concerts are amazing. He’s a contemporary musician, but his records sound like Syd Barrett or outsider pop music from the ’60s and ’70s.

M. Takara – ‘No Escapa’

A contemporary Brazilian Drummer from Sao Paolo. With his solo project, he performs with a lot of unusual and weird instruments.

Os Mutantes – ‘Bat Macumba’

I suppose one of the most popular bands to emerge from Brazil, they were formed in the late 60s as a trio of teenagers – two brothers plus Rita Lee the female singer. This live video is from French TV, the guitar sounds are just awesome.

Clementina de Jesus – ‘Três Corimas’

Apparently Clementina was ‘discovered’ when she was an older woman. She worked for many years as a maid, beginning her singing career at the age of 63.

Secos e Molhados – ‘Sangue Latino’

The band name translates to ‘The Wet And The Drys’. They were a rock / glam band active in the 70s, releasing two albums. They have awesome cover artwork, too.

Novos Baianos – ‘Brasil Pandeiro’

I first heard this band driving fast in a car through a storm. The driver told me that they were a band from the 60s and 70s that lived and play together in a commune type setup, raising their kids together in a farm close to Rio. I love this video, it’s beautiful.

Ronnie Von – ‘Silvia: 20 Horas, Domingo’

Ronnie Von is awesome. In his youth he looked kinda like Anton from Brian Jonestown Massacre – dark, haunting features and weird eyes. He made a bunch of psychedelic albums before hosting his own TV show, inviting Os Mutantes as his regular guest band.
