What is there left to be said of Aretha Franklin? She is one of, if not the greatest voice to ever be recorded, she is the most charted female in history, she is the undisputed Queen of Soul and after recent footage of promotion video, she can now be (re)confirmed as the Queen of Sass.
In case you somehow missed it, the now 72-year old singer just released her 38th studio record, Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics and is currently in the process of promoting the album. In an incredibly hilarious cut-scene of video-in interviews with numerous US TV stations, Aretha has delivered quite possibly the best 3 and-a-half minutes of YouTube footage in 2014, as SPIN point out.
Naturally, each news reporter appears extremely nervous and excited to speak with the icon, and rightfully so, however these feelings are not reciprocated.
From rolling her eyes, to sighing deeply at questions she can’t hear, understand or care about, to responding to news anchors are saying “I love you” by glancing sideways and wryly saying “uh-huh” and feigning absolutely zero interest in a man’s account of one time when her saw her perform, Franklin proves once and for all that she has still got every bit of “it.”
The best and most fearful moment arrives when Franklin owns TV sound engineers for playing her music during one of the interviews, which reminded this writer of a time in primary school when a teacher silences you good and proper for misbehaving.
Whether Aretha just wasn’t feeling it that day or to the more probable, she simply cannot be bothered with pointless interviews where people profess their love to her, Franklin has made it abundantly clear, you better ‘Think’ and pay this Diva more than a little ‘Respect.’
Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics hit shelves last week and features an all-star studded list of covers including Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’ as well as her contemporaries Etta James’ ‘At Last’ and The Supremes’ ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’, it is yet another stunning release from a worldwide treasure.
