All remaining European dates for popular US band Baroness have been cancelled after their tour bus fell 10 metres from a viaduct in England overnight.
Two people were badly injured in the crash, and members of the group who played Soundwave in 2010 have been rushed to hospital for evaluation.
According to the BBC, two of those on board the bus receive multiple fractures and had to freed by firefighters, seven others had minor injuries. No injuries sustained were life threatening.
The band are currently in the UK touring their new record Yellow & Green, and were travelling Southhampton where they were due to play a gig when the crash occurred.
A spokesperson for the promoter of the concert told fans “It is with great regret that we have to inform you that Baroness were involved in a very serious road accident earlier today and will not be able to perform at Talking Heads tonight.”
“Our thoughts are with the band at this time and we wish them and their crew a speedy recovery,” the spokesperson added.
A spokesperson for the local emergency services said that the crash occurred after the coach carrying nine members of the band and crew left the road and fell 10 metres.
“Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident,” the spokesperson said. “At this stage it is too early to tell what the cause was.
“For reasons that are not yet known, the coach failed to stop at the bottom of Brassknocker Hill, travelled across the A46 and left the road, dropping around 30ft below, coming to rest near a canal.”
“Seven casualties moved to the Royal United Hospital will not leave hospital tonight,” a hospital spokesman said. “They will be treated for their injuries into this evening.”
An eyewitness to the accident, Tony Cook who was working on a construction site nearby, said that “at the top of the hill it is quite windy so they were going quite slow and seemed to be taking it quite carefully.”
“It was torrential rain – it was like one of these eastern storms or something, it was like a river down here. When we got down there the driver was hanging out of front of the coach, but his legs were trapped so we had to free him and get him back and comfortable.”
“Then we got some ladders down there so that the people that were conscious inside could get out. We just got the people to the side of the road and made them comfortable and just helped.”
Another witness added that the coach had “fallen off” the viaduct at the traffic lights. Heavy rain in the area reduced visibility and it was not possible for the air ambulance to land.
A message has since been posted on the band’s official Facebook page saying “Baroness were in a serious bus accident last night near Bath, England. The band members and crew are recovering at local hospitals. All tour dates are postponed until further notice. More updates to come.”
