Any album recorded in just 10 days could face its challenges, right? Beautiful Wild, though, holds true to the band’s signature guitar swagger, enticing vocals, and uplifting blues vibes.
Expelling a certain warmth and exuberance as the tracks glide and mould together, the Kiwi expats have opted for a deeper rock sound on this release. The final product will captivate fans, with a husky and mellow array that swoons its way past your defences and into your most-played list.
Frontman Glenn Mossop has a sensual capability to his lyricism – an undeniable hallmark of the album. ‘Bullet In The Barrel’ opens the record, igniting a slow-burning fire to keep you warm on a cold winter’s night. Mossop unravels tales of his broken heart, singing, “She’s got that gold revolver, used to bring down the jailhouse guard”. Such lyrics intrigue the mind into paying closer attention to the tales across the LP.
Boasting all the energy and appeal of a tight gig in the local alleyway, ‘Honey’ flirts with a rolling warm-and-fuzzy guitar riff, building anticipation before unleashing into sauntering solos and a grungy chorus. ‘Evolution’ is a lot of fun, with flirting guitar riffs and compelling lyrics in, “Go get lost to find your way / don’t look back on the pain / it’s just a game”.
There’s no denying the defiant rock n’ roll attitude of the third studio album from the now Melbourne residents. Utilising a punchy, distinctive blues and roots sound along with the head bopping grooves of ‘Wake Me Up’, there’s simply too many good tunes for any time or occasion to poke a stick at.
