“I wrote “Cinnamon” with my friend Ryan Raines, who is an incredible producer,” BENEE in a statement. “We made it about a year ago, and I have loved the song from the start. I’m so stoked to be sharing it with the world, it means a lot to me. I wrote it about moving to LA and feeling a little bit lost in the chaos, like everything was falling apart.

“It felt like nothing was working. The chorus is quite ethereal and a nice let go for me. I thought, “Well even if everything around me has turned to shit, I’m going to stay sweet, still be kind, and attract the right kind of people.” I got my friend Sora to play the cello in the bridge, which I LOVE. I cry sometimes when I listen to that part. And it’s such a fun song to perform live!”

On social media, BENEE described the album as her most personal work yet: “I’ve poured my whole heart into this project, and I’m so grateful for your patience. I can’t wait for you to step into this world I’ve built.”

“Cinnamon” follows singles “Off the Rails”,  “Animal” and “Sad Boiii”, all set to appear on Ur An Angel I’m Just Particles, her first LP since her 2020 debut Hey U X.

That debut album, which featured the platinum hit “Supalonely”, was named to Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s 80 Best New Zealand Albums of the 2020s So Far list. “The whole album’s full of sweet, breezy pop that’s fun and easy to listen to,” the feature noted, adding: “BENEE’s follow-up album is one of the most eagerly anticipated releases in New Zealand music.”

BENEE’s “Cinnamon” is out now.
