Beyoncé and JAY-Z were filmed remaining in their seats during the American National Anthem at the 2020 Super Bowl. This comes as no shock, however, as both artists have previously voiced their support of Colin Kaepernick, who became a household name after his famous protest.

Beyoncé, JAY-Z and their daughter, Blue Ivy, were spotted a few rows back from the field near the start of the game, as TMZ points out. When Demi Lovato took the mic for an absolutely unforgettable performance of the National Anthem, which she predicted she would do ten years ago, the Carter family chose to remain seated.

This year, the Super Bowl halftime show was headlined by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira in Miami.

Just yesterday, JAY-Z defended his partnership deal with the NFL despite Kaepernick’s partner slamming him and Kaepernick’s attorney saying he “cross[ed] the intellectual picket line.”

“As long as real people are being hurt and marginalized and losing family members, then yes, I can take a couple of rounds of negative press,” he told The New York Times

“No one is saying he hasn’t been done wrong. He was done wrong.” he mentioned, speaking on Colin Kaepernick and his protests against social injustices.

“I would understand if it was three months ago. But it was three years ago and someone needs to say, ‘What do we do now? Because people are still dying. We are two adult men who disagree on the tactic but are marching for the same cause.”

JAY-Z argued that he’s fighting for people of colour from a position of corporate influence, and he still supports Kaepernick’s movement. “No one is saying he hasn’t been done wrong. He was done wrong. I would understand if it was three months ago. But it was three years ago and someone needs to say, ‘What do we do now — because people are still dying?’”
