Some of Australia’s biggest festivals are fast becoming exclusive commodities, with the announcement that another Australian festival date has now sold out.

Sydney’s leg of the Big Day Out, which will take place on January 18 next year, has officially sold out of general admission tickets, according to the festival’s website.

Big Day Out promoter Ken West had foreseen the sellout, saying in October: “We’re probably six weeks away from selling out Sydney. The Gold Coast may not sell out this year, but it’s going to come pretty close.”

West also revealed in October that ticket sales for the 2013 festival have outshone the previous year; an encouraging factor for the festival. West’s prediction was based not only on the quality of the Big Day Out 2013 lineup, but  also the string of new, non-musical related festival experiences included in the touring event.

Next year’s Big Day Out will feature a revitalized spectrum of entertainment and culinary delights, including the recently announced Mexican wrestling bar, which features an action-packed display where luchadores perform breathtaking acrobatic feats in a fast-paced, fun-filled, character-driven style.

Adding to this, the festival will also include Chow Town, which features culinary outlaws Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz of Porteno / Bodego overlooking the project nationally, where festival goers are tipped to experience some of the most unique festival food going around, promising American Barbeque style Brisket and Pulled Pork, Lobster Corn Dogs, hand held Tostadas de Atun Fresco, and Chinese duck Bao’s to feature.

They’ve also announced the return of the Big Day Out ambience team: the one and only Duckpond, Heavy G, Larry Kronic Jr and Cristo aka The Lilypad, who  are all back in 2013. The Lilypad will include Freak Factor, Lilypad House Party, Breakfast of Morons, Bogan Karaoke, and the Xtreme Food Olympics.Big Day Out promoter Ken West had foreseen the sellout, saying in October: “We’re probably six weeks away from selling out Sydney.”

Along with the unique additions to the Big Day Out experience, West and promoters also added a swathe of local Australian talent to the 2013 lineup with a swag of new bands announced for each capital city.

The now sold-out Sydney lege features home town acts Something With Numbers, Deep Sea Arcade, Fishing, and Royal Headache alongside Australian bands The Medics, Thy Art Is Murder, Good Heavens, Stereogamous, The Griswolds, The Gooch Plams, and Triple J Unearthed winners, Jackie Onassis. Rounding out the exclusive Sydney list is Urthboy, Chance Waters, Bob Log III, and Donny Benet.

The Aussie additions join the expansive list of local and international acts blessing the festival stages this summer. Big names such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs rubbing shoulders with Aussie acts like 360, Grinspoon, and House Vs. Hurricane.

The many changes to the Big Day Out were a result of its troubled showing earlier this year, which led to the new creative partnership with C3 Presents – responsible for Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits – which reignited the revamp of the iconic Australian festival.

The move  helped establish greater artist buying power and expansion of both the Big Day Out and Lollapalooza brands. The new partnership also helped create many opportunities for Australian and international artists to play across the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
