Billie Joe Armstrong has shared the latest instalment of his No Fun Mondays (and occasionally Wednesdays) series. The veteran rocker has covered John Lennon’s 1971 Imagine cut ‘Gimme Some Truth’.

“This song was written by John Lennon. The first time I heard it was from one of my all-time faves Generation X!” Armstrong shared in the post’s caption. ” My version lands somewhere in between.”

The politically-fuelled track was originally penned in protest against the Vietnam war. The Green Day frontman has reimagined the track to reflect the current political turmoil unfurling across America today.

Armstrong has spent his time in quarantine cracking off a most impressive catalogue of covers, other contributions to No Fun Mondays series include a cover of  The Wonders’ ‘That Thing You Do!’ from the 1996 film of the same out, as a tribute to the late Adam Schlesinger. He has also covered Tommy James & The Shondells’ ‘I Think We’re Alone Now,’ The Bangles’ ‘Manic Monday’ — with Bangels singer Susanna Hoffs, Johnny Thunders’ ‘You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory,’ Kim Wilde’s ‘Kids in America’ and more.

In addition to keeping us entertained with covers, Armstrong has revealed that he has been using his time in isolation to chip away at new Green Day music. In a recent interview with Kerrang!, Armstrong revealed he’d been “writing a lot of music” during the lockdown.

“I had all these melodies in my head, so I wrote, like, six songs since all of this has been going on,” he said.

“I don’t know when I can get together with Mike [Dirnt, bass] and Tré [Cool, drums], but I told them to make sure that they’re quarantined for now, and then I hope down the road we can get back in the studio with [‘Father Of All…’ producer] Butch Walker.”
